Laser technology innovator passes

William H. “Bill” Shiner, who holds several laser technology patents and was a founding member of Laser Institute of America, passed away in May. Shiner started his professional career at American Optical Corp. He and a partner later purchased the laser division and founded Laser Inc., which they sold to Coherent in 1978, and Shiner became vice president of sales and marketing. In 2002, he joined IPG Photonics, recently retiring as vice president of industrial laser sales. Shiner is credited with patents dating back to 1969 and as recently as 2015. He served on LIA’s board for more than 40 years and as its president in 2007.
